LED light bulbs may not be magic bullet for energy savings

September 1st, 2010

Using more efficient lights like LED bulbs will not necessarily lessen human impact on the environment.  Applied Physics. Though artificial light sources are increasingly efficient, scientists point out that people may even the keel on energy costs by using light sources more and more. To get the efficiency to translate to energy savings, energy providers may have to raise their prices.

The perspective paper focuses on human use of artificial lighting, an energy expenditure that accounts for 0.72 percent of the world’s gross domestic product. Artificial lighting has become more and more efficient, from oily lamps to incandescent bulbs to fluorescent bulbs, and LEDs are poised as the next efficiency jump.

While a more-efficient fixture on its own consumes less energy than its predecessor—an LED as bright as a 60-watt incandescent bulb consumes only 7 watts of power—but that doesn’t mean its owner will carry the energy savings, the authors point out. As lighting becomes more efficient and less expensive, they say, people will likely elect to use more and more of it.
In order to get people to save energy, the authors suggest that the best way may be to force the savings at the source by increasing the cost of power. They hope that this would hold energy consumption constant, at least, while preserving some of the productivity that could be gained by using more light.

Grow Plants with Compact Fluorescent Lamps

August 27th, 2010

Compact fluorescent lamps are often used in indoor gardening applications. They use very little electricity and produce very little heat as well. Compact fluorescents work best for supplemental lighting to plants, and for plants that are in their vegetative state. There are a variety of sizes of these bulbs, and they have a range of watt usage that expands from 25 to 250 watts. Simple daylight bulbs can be used for supplemental lighting, but consumers should be aware that CFLs that are made for growing plants are built differently, and will make an enormous difference when used in the garden.

Growing plants indoors is often the only way city dwellers can garden. Even people who have outdoor gardens plant seeds indoors, however, moving the plants outside when spring arrives. A key requirement to growing any plant is making sure it has plenty of light, and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) do the job very well.

Position the fan so it can blow evenly across the grow area. Larger grow areas will require more movement of air. Screw your bulb into the heat lamp cover, plug the light into the timer, and the timer into the wall. Set the timer so your plants will get sixteen hours of daylight daily in their vegetative state, or twelve hours for the flowering stage. Always position your light about 3 inches away from your plant. If the light is too high, the plants can stretch to reach it and produce weak stems. If the light is too close, it will burn the plant, causing it to be stressed and stunted.

What should I do if a CFL breaks?

August 23rd, 2010

Because there is such a small amount of mercury in CFLs, your greatest risk if a bulb breaks is getting cut from glass shards. Research indicates that there is no immediate health risk to you or your family should a bulb break and it’s cleaned up properly. You can minimize any risks by following these proper clean-up and disposal guidelines:

#Sweep up—don’t vacuum—all of the glass fragments and fine particles.
#Place broken pieces in a sealed plastic bag and wipe the area with a damp paper towel to pick up any stray shards of #glass or fine particles. Put the used towel in the plastic bag as well.
#If weather permits, open windows to allow the room to ventilate.

LED Lights

August 23rd, 2010

LED stands for “light-emitting diode.” LED lights are extremely small semiconductor diodes that are capable of creating light. The light that is created by any given LED can be of any color and can even be ultraviolet or infrared. The light that is created by an LED light depends on the material that is used to make the semiconductor and the current that is run though it. There are many different types of LEDs, including miniature ones, as well as high-powered LEDs and multicolor variations.

LED lights have been used in the past for lighting on electrical equipment such as radios to indicate signal strength, and for Christmas trees. LED lights are now being used to replace traditional light bulbs in the house for illuminating rooms.

LED lights work very similarly to standard light bulbs except for the fact that LEDs are much smaller and contain no filament. Instead of a filament, an LED creates light using nothing but the movement of electricity along the path of its semiconductor. As the electrons stream across the semiconductor, they create electromagnetic radiation. Some forms of this electromagnetic radiation can take the form of visible light, which humans can perceive via sight.

There is an almost inexhaustible supply of applications for LED lights, some of which have already been realized and others that are currently being implemented. Within the world of electronics LED lights are used in traffic lights, screen displays, computers, brake lights and any other application which requires a bright, inexpensive and long-lasting light. They also are used in the burgeoning field of photonic textiles and as a source of light in places where high temperatures cannot be tolerated. Indeed, LED lights are one of the most important technologies in contemporary electronic products and many such products would be impossible without them.

How to select children’s room lighting

August 20th, 2010
In General, Children’s room is used for learning, playing and rest. So the overall indoors lighting should be higher and gentler than the adult’s room. In addition, the rooms also have a corresponding local lighting, so that children can do homework, watch books, play games and so on. In order to create a warm and peaceful atmosphere, Parents could use unique shaped lamps to make room playful.
If the arrangement of Indoor lighting is unreasonable, light is not sufficient, or in order to emphasize the decorative effect, regardless of the actual needs of the child, you will receive an error effect.
Learning to use lamp features: eye protection, safety and environmental protection.
For school-age children, learning is the primary task of this stage, therefore, to choose a suitable desk lamp is indispensable. Children’s world is always full of dreamy colors. When parents choose luminaries, they often choose lovely, colorful lighting, but sometimes the beautiful appearance of the luminaries does not guarantee the children’s vision health. Because the child is growing, the selection of luminaries not only needs to consider material quality, and whether conform to child’s psychological characteristic. As the lighting of the lamp for learning, more importantly in light is to meet child’s actual need.
Decorative lamp features: variable shapes, bright colors
Children’s room combines the overall lighting with local lighting to configure the lighting. Overall lighting use pendant lamp, ceiling lamp for the space to create bright, fantastic atmosphere. And local lighting use wall lamp, table lamp, lighting or other lamps to meet various lighting needs. The lamps should give your child a relaxed, full of charm of light perception in the shape and color, and expand children’s imagination, stimulate children’s learning interest. Therefore, parents can select children’s room lamps with the children, let the children enjoy the fun of choosing lamps.

“Light health” Problems Are Hard

August 17th, 2010
A survey showed that China’s urban residents because of lighting problems caused by dry eyes, pain, dizziness, headache, nervousness, fatigue and other symptoms increased significantly. Particular groups of children, incidence of myopia has been increasing in recent years, its causes are and we live in has a direct relationship between light environment.
Most consumers ignore the light health
Most consumers told reporters that the purchase of lights, they think of the practicality of lamps. It is understood that the consumer market, the concept of the source of health are unclear, the sales staff is only half-baked knowledge.
Light not only affects the visual
“Light Health” means the place from the use of functional and psychological needs, to the light source and lighting devices to achieve a reasonable and scientific layout selection.
Experts said lighting light on human health do have a greater impact.Influence through the nervous system alone, the human organism; also light on the cerebral cortex had a great impact on people’s mental activity, emotional impact. Bright light can change the brain’s internal clock, and this clock can control the body’s sleep and a long time to work in the light also reduces the body’s absorption of calcium. Therefore, the home run out to be helpful to health.
Family stress and more lighting
First of all, the splash screen is the phenomenon of fluorescent tubes, the general life of the inductor used in fluorescent ballasts, the light emitted 100 times per second will produce changes in brightness, long servants in the eyes of this light environment very easy to fatigue, easy produce myopia. In particular, some fluorescent tubes splash screen, if the rate is not high enough, it is prone to myopia. In fact, not only fluorescent tubes, computer monitors, television sets, also caused a visual splash killer.
Second, because of the irrational distribution of light caused. Some consumers like to use some neon lights to bring out the fantasy style. In fact, the splash screen while neon low, on the other hand if you use such a dark light source to light the human eye to see clearly must be close to the target, a long time to bring the myopic refractive prone. Similarly, if long-term in high school learning environment, will produce eye fatigue, also have an adverse effect on visual acuity.
In the choice of home lighting, incandescent lighting on visual acuity better choice. In the choice of fluorescent lamps should be a mixed white was the best, which most of the spectrum close to natural light, the effects on vision is relatively small.

LED bulbs

August 17th, 2010

The global market for LED light bulbs has expanded rapidly and looks set to continue growing over the next two years, despite the high cost of bulbs and confusion over their energy rating.

The “Global and China LED Industry Report 2009-2010″ released on July 29 revealed that the global LED market has grown from $7 billion in 2009 to $10.7 billion in 2010 and is expected to reach $20.4 billion by 2012.

LEDs or light emitting diodes are highly energy efficient, contain no mercury and have a longer life span than their incandescent lightbulb counterparts. The United States Department of Energy estimates that the adoption of LED lighting across the US would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 246 metric tons, reduce electric consumption by 25 percent and save energy equivalent to 24 large power plants.

The increasing availability of LED for use in household lighting is leading to a change in how the performance of the bulb is evaluated. In their information about LED bulbs, the European Union states that wattage, the traditional means of measuring a bulb’s power is no longer meaningful. Instead the EU measures the performance of the lamp in lumens, 1300-1400 lumens are equivalent to a 100Watt (W) incandescent bulb, 920-970 for 75W, 700-750 for a 60W, 410-430 lumens for a 40W and 220-230 lumens are equivalent to a 25W incandescent bulb.
Manufacturers argue that the high cost of an LED bulb is offset by its lifespan of several years and from the recent market growth it appears that consumers agree.
Energy inefficient bulbs began to be phased out in September 2009 in accordance with EU directives; by 2016 the EU plans to replace all incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LED alternatives.

LED Emergency Light Bars – the best beauties

August 13th, 2010
When the qualities of an object is intrinsically good, and the manufacturers use a platform to project that qualities to the best advantage, the resultant product will be a matchless item with exclusive properties. This is the background of LED emergency light bars.
Ever since LED lights, or the lights from the electronic light source of light emitting diodes, became a part of the illumination industry, its position there has been unassailable. It has been used in display boards, for billboards, in flashlights, for home lighting, and emergency vehicle lighting. In all these arenas it has been found to do an exceptionally good job. For vehicle lighting, LED lights are commonly used as LED emergency light bars and have gained instant popularity.
A light bar is an integrated unit of different types of lights and rotators and reflectors, enclosed in a dome. The lights within a light bar may variously be beacons, takedown lights, alley lights, and even included stalked lights in earlier models. All these lights may rely on halogen, strobe, or LED technology for lighting. LED emergency light bars are more practical and creative than light bars that use other technologies because of the many positive and highly beneficial qualities of LED lights.
One of the features, which give LED lights an edge over other types of lights, is the number of colors the light source can provide, and the extreme brightness of the lights. And these bright colors are intrinsic to the light source in the case of LED. The result is that there is no need to use color filters on the bulbs to produce different colors. Nor is there the need to make the covering dome colored, as is done in some light bars. These qualities make it very convenient for manufacturers to produce LED emergency light bars.
From the users end also, light bars that need not require a colored dome, or color filters, is easier to use. Police vehicles, which are the single largest users of light bars for their emergency lighting requirements, are continuously involved in stealth operations and undercover operations where they require to be invisible. When they rely on LED emergency light bars for their emergency lighting, mere switching off of the lights would make them low profile. At the same time, when they need the light to be visible, LED lights get activated in a flash.
Another plus point of LED lights is that they are directional and do not need external reflectors to divert it. This feature minimizes waste of light because light can be guided to be focused precisely at the spot, or on the object, which needs to be examined or highlighted. Minute or pointed examination of a scene, or an item, is always the need of the police and for this also LED emergency light bars come in very handy.
The only negative side of LED emergency light bars is that they do not come cheap. As such, the question, whether they are worth investing on, would have to be decided in the context of the benefits these light bars can give.
